He was probably the most exciting German driver in the pre-war period. His meteoric rise from unknown motorcycle racer to GP winner in a very short space of time was nothing but unique.
It came as no surprise to anyone that his daring and willingness to take risks was particularly evident at the Nürburgring. He was the first to achieve a time of under 10 minutes at the Eifel Race in 1937.
