The Andy Warhol Art car keeps a special place in my heart. Not only because the BMW M1 is one of the most iconic racing cars ever, but as it’s the one which was driven by Manfred Winkelhock, one of my all-time heroes in motorsport. This car is also the one, which achieved the best result of all BMW Art Cars in Le Mans ever: it came 6th in the 1979 edition of the classic round the clock race.
Also, this is the only car which was painted directly by the artist. The design of all other Art cars was done on models or mock-ups, or nowadays on the computer. The design is then transferred to the car via printed adhesive foils or by body painters, who replicated the design on the body parts of the cars.
Warhols words: “I tried to represent speed visually. When a car goes really fast, all the lines and colors blur”. And Andy himself really worked fast: it took him only about 28 minutes to finish the car!
For my painting, I did choose to use the cars colors in the background, as well as a pop art portrait of Andy and one of his quotes that really intrigue me: “Art is everything you can get away with”
